How to read the grades (Sahih, Hasan, Da'if, Tradition)

Hadith scholars grade each report by how reliably it reached us. The labels below are the ones used on this page.

  • SahihSound. The strongest grade. Everything in Bukhari and Muslim counts as sahih.
  • HasanGood. Reliable, slightly below sahih. Acted upon.
  • Da'ifWeak. The chain has a defect. Many scholars still allow acting on weak reports about virtues, as long as the practice itself is sound.
  • TraditionNot a hadith. A later prayer or practice passed down by scholars and saints. It can be read as a du'a, but its specific virtues are not from the Prophet.

Why read anything after prayer

The Qur'an tells believers to keep remembering Allah once the prayer is over:

Part by part

Istighfar three times, then "Allahumma anta's-salam"

Every prayer, right after the salam

  • Muslim 591 Sahih ThawbanWhen the Prophet finished his prayer he asked forgiveness three times, then said these exact words.

Thawban reported: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he would ask Allah's forgiveness three times and then say: "O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of Majesty and Honor."

Al-Walid (a narrator in the chain) said: I asked al-Awza'i, "How is the asking of forgiveness done?" He said: "You say: Astaghfirullah, astaghfirullah (I ask Allah's forgiveness, I ask Allah's forgiveness)."

'A'isha reported: When the Prophet ﷺ ended the prayer with the salam, he would stay seated only for as long as it takes to say: "O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of Majesty and Honor."

Samura ibn Jundub reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The words most beloved to Allah are four: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah), al-hamdu lillah (Praise be to Allah), la ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah), and Allahu akbar (Allah is the Greatest). It does not matter which of them you begin with. And do not name your servant boy Yasar, Rabah, Najih or Aflah, for you will ask, 'Is he there?' and if he is not, the answer will be 'No.'" [Samura added:] They are only four, so do not add to them in my name.

Glorify Allah, praise Him, and declare His greatness after every prayer thirty-three times." We then disagreed among ourselves; some of us said: "We glorify thirty-three times, praise thirty-three times, and declare His greatness thirty-four times." (Talha ibn Khirash said:) I heard Jabir ibn 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The best remembrance is La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah), and the best supplication is al-hamdu lillah (Praise be to Allah)."

Abu 'Isa (at-Tirmidhi) said: This hadith is hasan gharib; we know it only through Musa ibn Ibrahim. 'Ali ibn al-Madini and others narrated this hadith from Musa ibn Ibrahim.

No hadith was found for the specific count of 33. The number follows the tradition of the tesbihat.

Salawat on the Prophet

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him."

End of Surat al-Hashr, with "A'udhu billahi's-sami'i'l-'alim" three times

Fajr and Maghrib
  • Tirmidhi 2922 Da'if Ma'qil ibn YasarWhoever says this seeking of refuge three times in the morning and recites the last three verses of al-Hashr has 70,000 angels praying for him until evening, and if he dies that day he dies a martyr. The same holds in the evening.

Ma'qil ibn Yasar reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says in the morning three times: A'udhu billahi as-sami'i al-'alimi mina ash-shaytani ar-rajim (I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from Satan the outcast), and recites three verses from the end of Surat al-Hashr, Allah appoints seventy thousand angels to pray for him until evening; and if he dies that day, he dies a martyr. And whoever says it in the evening has the same standing."

Abu 'Isa (at-Tirmidhi) said: This hadith is gharib; we know it only through this route.

Tirmidhi called it gharib (known through one chain only). It speaks of morning and evening rather than after prayer specifically, which is why the tesbihat places it at Fajr and Maghrib.

End of Surat al-Baqarah (Amana'r-Rasul)

Other du'as
  • Tirmidhi 3505 Sahih Sa'd ibn Abi WaqqasThe du'a of Dhun-Nun (Yunus) in the whale, "La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu mina'z-zalimin" (21:87), is answered whenever a Muslim calls on Allah with it.

Sa'd reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The supplication of Dhu an-Nun (Jonah) when he called out from the belly of the whale was: La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu mina az-zalimin (There is no god but You; glory be to You; I have indeed been among the wrongdoers). No Muslim ever calls upon Allah with it for anything without Allah answering him."

Ibn 'Abbas said: "Hasbuna Allahu wa ni'ma al-wakil (Allah is enough for us, and He is the best One to rely on)"—Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said it when he was thrown into the fire, and Muhammad ﷺ said it when people told them: "The people have gathered against you, so fear them"; but it only increased them in faith, and they said: "Allah is enough for us, and He is the best One to rely on."

  • Abu Dawud 1495 Sahih Tirmidhi 3524 Hasan"Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum" and "Badi'a's-samawati wa'l-ard" are among the names the Prophet called Allah's Greatest Name. These names open the du'a read between the sunnah and fard of Fajr.

Anas reported that he was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while a man was praying. Then the man supplicated: "O Allah, I ask You, for all praise is Yours; there is no god but You, the Bestower of favors, Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining." The Prophet ﷺ said: "He has called upon Allah by His Greatest Name—the Name by which, when He is called, He answers, and when He is asked, He gives."

Anas ibn Malik reported: Whenever something weighed heavily on the Prophet ﷺ, he would say: "Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, bi-rahmatika astaghith (O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I call for help)." And with the same chain: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Hold fast to saying: Ya Dha al-Jalali wa al-Ikram (O Possessor of Majesty and Honor)."

Abu 'Isa (at-Tirmidhi) said: This hadith is gharib. It has also been narrated from Anas by another route.

The other verses in this section (9:129, 21:83, 3:185, 28:88, 55:26–27) are Qur'an. Repeating them 33 times is from the tradition.

Parts from tradition

These are not hadith. They are prayers that scholars and saints passed down and that the Nur tradition gathered into the tesbihat. They can be read as du'a; their specific virtues are not from the Prophet.

Salat al-Munjiya (Salaten Tüncînâ)

Every prayer Tradition

The story behind it is told by al-Fakihani (d. 734 AH) in al-Fajr al-Munir, from Shaykh Musa al-Darir. He was at sea when a deadly storm struck. In a dream the Prophet taught him this salawat, the passengers recited it, and the storm eased. Scholars point out that a dream cannot establish a hadith or a ruling, but the words themselves are a sound salawat and have been loved for centuries.

Tercüman-ı İsm-i A'zam and its closing du'a

Fajr and Asr Tradition

Found in Mecmûatü'l-Ahzâb (vol. II, p. 333) and in the Büyük Cevşen compilation. It is not in the main hadith books. The attribution to Hz. Ali that is sometimes given could not be confirmed. The closing phrase "Âhiyyen şerâhiyyen" ("the Living before all things and after all things") resembles a statement of Ibn Mas'ud in Ibn Abi Shayba's Musannaf (no. 30356), not a saying of the Prophet.

Other lines

Tradition

"Allahumma inna nuqaddimu ilayka…" (Fajr), "Amanna bi-annahu…" (Maghrib), the line of the Ecirna naming Üstad and Hocaefendi, "Allahumma la tukhrijna mina'd-dunya…" (before the salam) and the du'a between the sunnah and fard of Fajr. No hadith was found for these wordings. They come from the tradition.
